Although the previous-generation (1 ) ram pickup was a big success for dodge dodge knew it was getting long in the tooth compared to redesigned rivals from ford and gm. In 2002 the company revamped the ram but it was careful not to make any radical changes in terms of styling even though under the skin the dodge truck benefited from a number of improvements ranging from a stiffer frame and bigger brakes to the adoption of power-adjustable pedals and a larger passenger compartment in the quad cab models. Realizing that pickups are seeing increased duty as family vehicles and that most folks don't often fill up their pickup's bed that redesign saw dodge take 3 inches from the standard bed length (now 6 feet 3 inches) and add it to the passenger compartment. In essence this design allows the quad cab to have the expansive passenger room of a crew cab while keeping the truck's overall length nearly the same as an extended-cab truck. But to make sure that every potential customer's needs are met an 8-foot bed is still available. In response to concerns that the old 5. 9-liter magnum v8 had both poor performance and atrocious fuel consumption dodge made the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 available in the ram 1500 in late 2003. With 345 horsepower this mill with the legendary name makes 100 horses more than the old 5. 9-liter magnum. Torque is also more robust and peaks at a stout 375 pound-feet. Further enhancements for 2006 include a stronger frame a new 4wd suspension system and fresh exterior style. The new mega cab model which is actually built using a heavy-duty ram 2500 frame adds 20 inches to the quad cab's cabin. We think highly of the 2006 dodge ram as we appreciate its powerful performance agile handling comfortable ride good crash test scores and tight build quality. The dodge ram is the full-size truck with attitude. No not bratty teenage girl attitude but burly tattooed nightclub bouncer attitude. A large grille and pumped-up front fenders evoke the styling of a kenworth tractor and a rumbling and muscular v8 under the hood does a good impersonation of a nascar racer. When drivers of subcompacts have this truck filling their car's rearview mirror getting out of the way is the first thing on their minds. On their own these traits give the ram some needed distinctiveness in the full-size truck segment. Thankfully there's a bit of refinement underneath the machismo. Dodge has given its truck better-than average handling reflexes a roomy cabin and plenty of convenience-oriented equipment. Though the 2006 dodge ram 1500 remains largely untouched dodge did make a number of changes last year. These included a redesigned frame and suspension for better handling and ride quality, an updated interior design, and an additional crew cab body style called mega cab. True to its name the ram mega cab boasts one of the largest pickup truck cabins available. Built on the same chassis used for the heavy-duty ram 2500 long-bed model the mega cab boasts a cabin that's about 20 inches longer than the regular quad cab. There's more rear legroom than what's available in many sedans and the rear seats even recline. Though dodge's full-size pickup truck has never been able to match the f-150 or silverado in terms of sales we've thought highly of the current-generation ram since its debut in 2003. For a potential truck owner wanting style and capability the 2006 ram 1500 is a very good choice. But shoppers should also be aware that this model year is a dynamic one for full-size trucks. Toyota is introducing a new tundra (a real full-size this time) and general motors has an all-new sierra and silverado. It also has power windows, locks, mirrors, cruise, am/fm cd, a/c, drink holders, and more. It is powered by that 5. 7 hemi v8 and automatic transmission. This dark blue truck isn't perfect by any means. But don't mind a couple dents. It is very solid and will last for many miles to come. This truck is priced thousands less than it's retail value just for that reason. It will be great for a work truck, extra truck around the house, or for most anything.
