1987 Cadillac Allante' 1 of 3363 BUILT FOR 1987!! Asthe 70’s came to a close, Cadillac was losing the race to Mercedes and Jaguarin the personal luxury convertible market. In the early 80’s Cadillac broughtback the convertible in the Eldorado platform, but that still did not competewith Jag and Benz. So Cadillac took their task to an Italian builder by the nameof Pininfarina. They wanted a two seater, v8 roadster with unique styling butwanted the styling to encompass all Cadillac stood for in design. The Allantewas introduced in 1986. The most unusual way these bodies were shipped toDetroit was by specially equipped Boeing 747s. They could carry 56 bodies at atime and total production of the Allante from 1986-1993 were only 21000 for all8 years. When we purchased the vehicle, we bought two from acollector who had recently passed. This 87 Caddy and an 88 Jag featured inanother eBay auction. The battery was stone dead, we put a battery in thevehicle and the car started and ran. Two days later the fuel pump had failed. Atthat point the tank was dropped, the old fuel was removed and a new pump wasinstalled. I did remove the muffler and tailpipe as it was no good. It will need a full service.
